English Proficiency Testing Information

Students in grades K-12 who are determined to have limited English proficiency- based upon the completion of a Home Language Survey and the initial assessment of their English proficiency-must take the ACCESS for ELLs or Alternate ACCESS assessment annually each spring until they meet the requirements for full English Proficiency.   The testing window for this assessment is from January 21st - March 8th.   Students and parents can find out more about these assessments on the South Carolina Department of Education website and by contacting their school.

Students are reminded to do the following prior to the first day of the test window (January 21)

  • Restart your student device.
  • Ensure that your student device is fully charged each day of ACCESS for ELLs testing.
  • Arrive on time each day for testing.
  • Avoid scheduling doctor’s appointments and other out-of-school functions are scheduled testing days.

On Test Days:

Students may not be in possession of any personal electronic devices including, but not limited to: phones, smartwatches, wireless headphones/earbuds, devices with Bluetooth capabilities, smart glasses, etc.

Consequences of misconduct include, but are not limited to:

  • Invalidation of the test score
  • Receiving a zero on the test
  • Suspension or expulsion from school
  • Investigation by local police or the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) with possible criminal charges or other legal sanction
